The Situation

Describe the situation here:
Students watching video on phone of another teacher dancing on bar in college.

Understanding the Situation

a. What might be some underlying causes of the situation that you need to think about?

b. Are there resources within your school that might be of help? If so who and what questions should you ask them?

c. Are there other resources that might be helpful?

A Solution

As a teacher, you will often try to address problems by preventing them. That said, things happen in classrooms that cannot be anticipated beforehand and you will have to make decisions about how to address the situation.

a. Decide whether your action is proactive (action aimed at preventing problem) or reactive (action occurs after situation develops).
Proactive: don't allow students to use phones in school (i.e. shouldn't need to check if it is appropriate b/c shouldn't be on them)
Reactive: Take phones away. Tell them they shouldn't be using phone in school, let alone watching movies. Send to principal, have them speak with principal & teacher in video.

b. Decide what grade level you will "solve" this problem for.

c. Describe what you'll do.
Take phones away. Tell them they shouldn't be using phone in school, let alone watching movies. Send to principal, have them speak with principal & teacher in video.
d. Describe how you anticipate your action(s) will affect the situation.

Solution Consequences

Before you act to address a classroom situation, you have to anticipate possible consequences of your actions. Spell out some of these effects here:

a. How will you action be perceived by your students?
they will probably be mad for taking phone away (since they were bold enough to do it in plain sight, obviously don't normally have consequences for this behavior)
may think you are sticking up for teacher dancing

b. How will your action affect the learning climate in your classroom?
tell them there will be a zero tolerance policy on electronics in classroom, regardless of how controversial or interesting it may be.

c. What might your students learn from your action? (Be sure to note both positive and negative lessons.)
That phones are not allowed in classroom, that you don't participate in gossip about other faculty or students. That you maintain professionalism

d. How will your students' parents react to their child's account of your action? (Remember that they will put their own "spin" on what you do.)
some might be mad, but point out rule that cell phones are not to be used in class

e. How will your administrator(s) react to your action?
Support my actions.
----

BOTTOM LINE: I SHOULD...

take phone away, send students to principal to explain situation, alert other teacher of issue.
